The fastest way to ruin a pair of barefoot sneakers is to treat every material the same. Canvas, corduroy, leather blends, and mesh each react differently to water, scrubbing, and cleaning products.
Here is the short version that works for every Rutsu sneaker: brush off dry dirt first, spot clean with mild soap and a little water, take the insoles out, and let everything air dry at room temperature. Never put them in a washing machine or dryer. The rest of this guide covers how to adjust that routine for your specific material.
Step one: know what your upper is made of
Care depends on the upper, so check this before you pick up a brush. Here's what Rutsu's current lines use:
| Rutsu line | Upper material |
|---|---|
| Rutsu Original | Canvas |
| Rutsu Original Corduroy | Corduroy |
| Rutsu Earth | Fusion Leather (30% leather, 70% microfiber) |
| Rutsu Breeze | Fusion Leather with polyester mesh side panels |
| Rutsu Shift (work shoe) | Microfiber and mesh blend |
The product name on your box or order confirmation tells you which line you own. If you no longer have either, compare your pair with the styles in the Barefoot Sneakers collection, where each line has its own look.
What never to do, whatever the material
Rutsu's care instructions across its sneaker listings share the same warnings. Avoid all of these:
- Machine washing
- Tumble drying or putting shoes near a heater
- Bleach
- Ironing
- Harsh chemicals
- Extreme temperatures, including storage in direct sunlight
Barefoot sneakers have thin, flexible soles and lightweight uppers. They don't have bulky construction to hide damage, so heat and harsh cleaners show up quickly as warping, fading, or weakened seams.
Before you clean any pair
- Remove the laces and insoles. Rutsu's insoles are removable so they can be cleaned separately.
- Let mud dry completely. Wet mud smears deeper into fabric. Dry mud brushes off.
- Brush off loose dirt. Use a soft brush, working gently around the seams and the stitching along the sole.
How to clean canvas (Rutsu Original)
Canvas is durable, but it absorbs water and can show watermarks if it dries unevenly.
- Mix a small amount of mild soap into lukewarm water.
- Dip a soft brush or cloth, then shake or wring off the excess.
- Work in small circles on the dirty areas. Don't soak the shoe or submerge it.
- Wipe the whole upper lightly with a clean damp cloth, so the fabric dries evenly and doesn't leave a ring around the spot you cleaned.
- Air dry at room temperature.
For light scuffs between deeper cleans, a soft brush and a damp cloth are usually enough.
How to clean corduroy
Corduroy has raised ridges (called wales) with a soft pile that flattens or goes shiny if you scrub it hard. This is general guidance for corduroy fabric, adapted to Rutsu's care instructions.
- Brush dry dirt out gently, moving along the direction of the ridges rather than across them.
- For marks, dampen a cloth with mild soapy water and wring it out well.
- Blot the stain instead of rubbing. Pressing lifts dirt without crushing the pile.
- Blot again with a clean damp cloth to remove soap.
- Once it's fully dry, brush lightly along the ridges to lift the texture back up.
Use as little water as possible. Corduroy takes longer to dry than canvas, and a heavily wet upper is more likely to dry unevenly.
How to clean Fusion Leather (Rutsu Earth and Breeze)
Fusion Leather blends leather with microfiber, so it needs a gentler approach than fabric. Rutsu's instructions are specific here.
- Wipe the surface with a soft cloth dampened with water and a little mild soap.
- Follow with a clean damp cloth to remove any residue.
- For deeper cleaning, Rutsu recommends a leather cleaner suitable for blended materials. Check the cleaner's label, and test it first on a small, hidden area.
- Air dry away from direct heat.
Don't reach for products meant only for full-grain leather without checking that they work on blended materials. A 70% microfiber upper doesn't always respond the way traditional leather does.
How to clean mesh (Breeze panels and the Shift)
Mesh is open by design, which helps with airflow but also lets dirt settle into the weave.
- Brush out dust and grit with a soft brush.
- Dab the mesh with a cloth or soft brush dipped in mild soapy water.
- Dab with a clean damp cloth to rinse.
- Let it dry completely before wearing.
On the Breeze, the mesh sits right next to Fusion Leather. Clean the mesh panels carefully so you don't soak the leather-blend areas, then wipe those separately using the Fusion Leather method above.
If you own knit sneakers from another brand, a similar gentle, low-water approach usually applies, but always follow that brand's care label.
Cleaning the insoles and outsoles
Insoles. Wipe them with mild soapy water, dab them with a clean damp cloth, and let them dry completely. Rutsu's instructions say to let both shoes and insoles dry fully before putting the insoles back.
Outsoles. Brush out any grit stuck in the tread, then wipe the rubber with a damp, soapy cloth. Clean tread also helps you check for wear.
Drying without damage
- Air dry at room temperature in a well-ventilated spot.
- Stuff the shoes loosely with paper towels to absorb moisture and help them hold their shape, and swap the paper when it gets damp.
- Keep them away from radiators, heaters, hair dryers, and direct sunlight.
- Wait until every part is dry before wearing or storing.
Quick stain guide
Mud. Let it dry, brush it off, then spot clean for your material.
Water marks on canvas or corduroy. Lightly dampen the whole panel evenly and let it dry again, so there's no hard edge.
Salt or street residue. Wipe it off with a damp cloth soon, before it dries into the material.
Grease or oil. Blot, don't rub, then clean gently with mild soap and water. Deep grease in fabric may not come out completely, and harsh degreasers can cause more damage.
When cleaning isn't enough
Cleaning keeps a pair looking and feeling fresh, but it can't fix everything. If the tread is worn smooth, the sole is pulling away from the upper, or the fabric has torn at the flex point, it's time to replace the pair.
If you are shopping for a replacement and have HSA or FSA funds, Rutsu's page on how to Pay for Your Barefoot Shoes With HSA or FSA Funds explains the Truemed checkout option. Eligibility depends on a medical review and on your plan's rules, so it isn't guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put barefoot sneakers in the washing machine?
Not Rutsu sneakers. Rutsu's care instructions say not to machine wash them. Hand clean with mild soap and water instead.
How often should I clean my barefoot sneakers?
Brush off dirt whenever you notice it and spot clean as needed. Clean them sooner after mud, salt, or spills, because stains are easier to remove before they set.
How do I get the smell out of my barefoot sneakers?
Remove the insoles after wear, clean them separately, and let the shoes and insoles dry completely. Shoes that never fully dry tend to hold onto odor.
Is Fusion Leather waterproof?
Rutsu doesn't describe Fusion Leather as waterproof. Wipe off water and let the shoes air dry.
Can I use my HSA or FSA to buy a replacement pair?
Possibly, but not automatically. It depends on whether the purchase is primarily for a specific medical condition, the documentation you have, and your plan. Our guide on Which Shoes Actually Qualify as HSA/FSA-Eligible explains the rules in plain terms.
With the right method for your material, a good pair of barefoot sneakers can stay clean, comfortable, and ready for daily wear much longer.
